Political career
U.S. Senate
In 1954, Saltonstall was among twenty-two Senate Republicans who voted for the censure of his Wisconsin colleague Joseph McCarthy,[3] who investigated and exposed communist infiltration of the United States Army and the Department of State.
Saltonstall ran for the Republican nomination for president in 1948, but finished last.[Citation Needed]
According to an analysis of his record in the 81st Congress, Saltonstall voted 71% in line with conservatives.[4] Supportive of civil rights, he voted in favor of cloture for Robert A. Taft's "voluntary FEPC" legislation[5] and backed President Harry Trumans Army desegregation efforts.[6] He also gave support to the Civil Rights Acts of 1957,[7] 1960,[8] 1964,[9] the Voting Rights Act of 1965,[10] and the 24th Amendment to the Constitution.[11]
In the 1964 presidential election, Saltonstall initially was seen as loyal to Moderate Republican Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr.[12] though ultimately supported the Goldwater/Miller ticket after his Arizona colleague was nominated.[13]
Personal life and family
Saltonstall married the former Alice Wesselhoeft in 1916, with whom he had six children. Among them included William L. Saltonstall, a Massachusetts state senator,[14] and Leverett Saltonstall, Jr., the president of the Foundation Seed Corporation.[15]
He was the uncle of Maine newspaper editor Richard S. Saltonstall, Jr.[16] and a distant cousin of philanthropist Robert Saltonstall.[17]
