In Lewis v. Harris, 188 N.J. 415 (2006), the New Jersey Supreme Court held by a 7-0 margin that the state must allow same-sex civil unions to grant homosexuals the same rights as heterosexuals. But the court held by a 4-3 margin that the State need not mandate same-sex marriage licenses.
