Liberty Island is a small island in the territorial waters of New Jersey close to Jersey City, where the Statue of Liberty stands. Prior to 1956, it was known as Bedloe's Island. The island is owned by the federal government, surrounded by New Jersey waters, with the part of the island above water being part of New York.
