LineageOS is a lightweight operating system designed for mobile devices, which is based on the Android operating system. LineageOS is a "de-googled" android build, but is designed to offer more than that alone.[1] It offers users more control,[2] more customization options, longer-lasting support for older devices, among other benefits. Many "custom ROMs" similar to LineageOS will only support a few phone models, often all from one manufacturer. However, LineageOS stands out in that is support an unusually large variety of device types.[3]

History

The project began under a different name and organization, back in 2009. Known as Cyanogen at the time, it was designed to support the "Dream" and "Magic" models of HTC phones. As the project owner was replaced, the system was renamed as "CyanogenMOD", to reflect the ongoing improvements and expansions. However, Cyanogen Inc. eventually announced its shutdown, so the operating system was forked under the new name of Lineage, in December, 2016.[4]
