LineageOS is a lightweight operating system designed for mobile devices, which is based on the Android operating system. LineageOS is a "de-googled" android build, but is designed to offer more than that alone. It offers users more control, more customization options, longer-lasting support for older devices, among other benefits.[1]

The project began under a different name, back in 2009. Known as Cyanogen at the time, it was designed to support the "Dream" and "Magic" models of HTC phones. As the progect owner was replaced, and ongoing improvements and expansions, it was eventually renamed as "Lineage" in December, 2016.[2]
