Lurleen Burns Wallace September 19, 1926 – May 7, 1968) was the 46th Governor of Alabama succeeding her husband, George C. Wallace, who was term-limited. The Alabama constitution forbade consecutive terms.[1] She was Alabama's first female governor serving for fifteen months from January 1967 until her death from cancer in May 1968, while her husband was in the process of assembling his American Independent Party to challenge Richard M. Nixon and Hubert Humphrey in the presidential election.
In 1966, Mrs. Wallace handily defeated Republican U.S. Representative James Douglas Martin (1918-2017) of Gadsden in the gubernatorial general election. John Sparkman won another term in the same election against the Republican John Grenier.
