MTV is a cable television channel that originated in 1980 by airing the first music video, "Video Killed the Radio Star" and showed often crudely produced music videos as its sole programming. MTV became wildly popular in the 1980s with its slogan "I want my MTV" among teens and adolescents. The music channel later aired thematic segments of programming focusing on specific genres of music such as "Headbangers Ball," "Yo! MTV Raps," and "120 Minutes." MTV currently airs "reality" tv programs and produces some films, usually met with disappointment from both critics and audiences alike, with rare exceptions such as the film Jackass.
