Following the execution of his father and brothers by Cao Cao he raised an army to oppose him. After Cao Cao was able to trick Ma Chao into distrusting his own uncle his army was totally defeated. He then sought refuge with Zhang Lu but didn't like Zhang Lu's incompetence. Upon the invasion of the territory of Liu Zhang by Liu Bei, Ma Chao took the chance to defect to Liu Bei's army. He was highly trusted by Liu Bei and his advisors and was named one of the Five Tiger Generals of Shu Han.
