The Maastricht Treaty, officially known as the Treaty on European Union, lays the groundwork as the founding document of the EU. It was signed on February 7th, 1992. Together with amending treaties Treaty of Amsterdam (1999), Treaty of Nice (2003), and the Treaty of Lisbon (2009), the modern framework of the EU is established.

It is so named because it was signed in Maastricht, Netherlands.
