Giant Underwater Oil Plume Lurks Beneath Gulf of Mexico. Scientists discover oil plume at least 22 miles long, 3,000 feet deep in the Gulf of Mexico, suggesting that the tens of millions of gallons of oil that leaked from a busted BP well could persist far longer than initially expected. The existence of the plume, which was concretely pinned to the blown-out well, contradicts a five-page report released August 4 by the Obama administration which claimed "a vast majority" of the BP oil spill is now completely gone. Anti-Abortion Activists Blast Opt-Out Insurance Clause at University of North Carolina. Anti-abortion activists are blasting the University of North Carolina decision to give students the option of dropping abortion coverage from their university-sponsored health insurance, while requiring them to still pay the full premium. There will be no price break for students who opt out of the abortion provision, the activists complain. And, despite reassurances from university officials, they say they are concerned that the insurance plan will comingle funds, essentially using the premiums paid by pro-life students to help pay for abortions. Election 2010: Nevada Governor: Republican Brian Sandoval continues to hold a double digit lead over Democrat Rory Reid (son of the despicable Harry Reid) in Nevada’s gubernatorial election. Sandoval now picks up 52% support from Nevada voters, while Reid, continuing a downward trend, has 36% of the vote. Last month the GOP candidate and former judge held a 50% to 40% edge over Reid. 1 in 5 Americans Think Barack Obama Is A Muslim.

The new Pew Research survey reports a sharp increase in the number of Americans who say President Obama is a Muslim. The increase has occurred over the last couple of years, and the poll was taken before the president stepped into the fray over the Ground Zero mosque controversy. According to the survey, nearly one in five Americans (18%) say Obama is a Muslim, up from 11 percent in 2009. Obama claims he is a Christian, but the number of people who say Christian when asked his religion has gone down sharply, from 51% in 2008 to 34 percent today. And 43% say they don't know what religion the president follows. [13]

White House Directive: Erect Signs at All Stimulus Projects as ‘Symbol of President Obama’s Commitment to American People’. Federal contractors receiving money for projects funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)—the $862 billion economic stimulus law President Barack Obama signed in February 2009—have been encouraged and, in some cases, required by the administration to post signs that say their work is funded by that specific act. The law itself does not require the signs. The program sprung from a March 2009 directive issued by the Office of Management and Budget in the Obama White House. [15]

More Liberal Judge Craziness: The 14 crosses erected along Utah roads to commemorate fallen state Highway Patrol troopers convey a state preference for Christianity and are a violation of the U.S. Constitution, a federal appeals court said Wednesday. A three-judge panel from Denver's 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in its 38-page ruling that a "reasonable observer" would conclude that the state and the Utah Highway Patrol were endorsing Christianity with the cross memorials. "This may lead the reasonable observer to fear that Christians are likely to receive preferential treatment from the UHP," the justices wrote. What? [16]

Associated Press Poll: Barack Obama Hits New Low on Handling of the Economy. President Barack Obama earned his lowest marks ever on his handling of the economy in a new Associated Press-GfK poll, which also found that an overwhelming majority of Americans now describe the nation's financial outlook as poor. Eleven weeks before the Nov. 2 balloting, just 41% of those surveyed approve of the president's performance on the economy, down from 44% in April, while 56% disapprove. And 61 percent say the economy has gotten worse or stayed the same on Obama's watch.

Obama is suffering in other areas, too. Just 34 percent now call him an above average or outstanding president, down from 42 percent in January. And 28 percent call him average, while 38 percent say he's even worse. Americans can take heart with the nearness of Obamageddon.

Body of Abducted Mexican Mayor Found Bound, Dumped by Roadside. Police have found the body of a Mexican mayor days after he was abducted at gunpoint from his home in northern Mexico, El Norte reported Wednesday. Edelmiro Cavazos, the Mayor of Santiago, was seized from his home on Sunday. His corpse was located by Mexican security sources on a remote rural road near the northeastern city Monterrey. Local media have blamed the kidnapping on drug gangs. Santiago, a town that forms part of metropolitan Monterrey, has recently suffered a surge in violence which cops blame on warring cartels. [20]

Public Schools Battle Over Religious Holidays. As an increasing number of U.S. public schools adjust their calendars to observe Muslim holidays, a debate is growing over how far schools should go to accommodate minority religious populations — and where they should stop. Syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor Cal Thomas says he doesn't see Christian students getting similar accommodations around the country. "It is instructive to me that schools are going out of their way to discriminate against Christians by denying them the right to voluntarily pray with coaches and other players before games, but those same schools bend over backwards to accommodate Muslim student athletes for Ramadan," Thomas told FoxNews.com. Bizzaro Nancy Pelosi World: Pelosi Calls for Probe of Mosque Foes.
The obviously overly-tired House Speaker suggests a coordinated effort may be at work behind the opposition to a proposed mosque near Ground Zero, saying the dispute has been 'ginned up' for political purposes. "There is no question that there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some," the liberal Pelosi said in remarks posted Tuesday in a video on the San Francisco Chronicle website, "And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded."

A Republican aide ridiculed Pelosi's claim that there was a "conspiracy" to oppose the project. "If the speaker needs help finding the heart of the 'GOP GZM Conspiracy,' I urge her to ask Sasquatch," the aide told Fox News. "His office is behind the black helicopter hangar between the Unicorn pen and the leprechaun's pot of gold." [25]

US Appeals Court Panel: Law Against Faking Receipt Of Medal of Honor Is Unconstitutional !
A panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with a faker in a 2-1 decision Tuesday, agreeing that the law was a violation of his free-speech rights. The majority said there's no evidence that such lies harm anybody, and there's no compelling reason for the government to ban such lies. Duty, honor and country have no room in the liberal world of some federal judges.... [27]

The calm before the liberal claptrap: all is quiet less than 48 hours before liberals award the Fields Medal -- once based purely on merit -- to less-than-the-best mathematicians for political reasons. Greek Orthodox Church Destroyed On 9/11 Asks 'What About Us?' Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America accuses New York City officials of turning their backs on the reconstruction of the only church destroyed during the terror attacks, while the controversial Ground Zero Mosque moves forward. Under Threat From Mexican Drug Cartels, Reporters Go Silent.
A new word has been written into the lexicon of Mexico's drug war: narco-censorship. It's when reporters and editors are forced to write what the traffickers want them to, or simply refrain from publishing the whole truth in a country where members of the press have been intimidated, kidnapped and killed. That big shootout near a Reynosa mall? Convoys of gunmen whizzed through the streets and fired on each other for hours. But you won't read about it in Reynosa. [33]

Professional Politicians: Give It Up! Just 37% Of Voters Say Their Congress Member Deserves Reelection. Just 27% of Likely U.S. Voters think their representative in Congress is the best possible person for the job, down six points from November of last year. Professor Andrew Hacker (real name) observes that many colleges are no longer worth the price: "$200,000 over a four-year span? That's what tuition, fees, room, and board are costing at colleges like Kenyon ($50,400), Reed ($51,850), and Bowdoin ($52,880)." [35]

Break in the Chain: Pathetic and Desperate, Harry Reid Goes Against Obama on Mosque.
Locked in a tight re-election race, Nevada Senator Harry Reid became the highest profile Democrat to respond to Obama, who last week backed the right for the developers to build a mosque near Ground Zero. Since his comments Friday, the Democratic president and his aides have worked to explain the statement, which drew criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike. Sharron Angle, Reid's opponent, said Muslims have the right to worship anywhere, but Obama's support for construction of the mosque at ground zero "ignored the wishes of the American people, this time at the expense of victims of 9/11 and their families." [40]

On a related note, CreationWiki has developed an exciting resource for Christian video evangelism which shows people how to gain a wider audience and also how to thwart atheist cyberbullies at YouTube.[45] Conservapedia plans on telling Global Media Outreach about the exciting new CreationWiki resource.[46]

Tea Partiers Take Over Stretch of Arizona - Mexico Border. Tea party activists supporting Arizona's 2010 Immigration Act were rallying along a remote stretch of the Arizona-Mexico border about 70 miles west of Nogales in support of the law that a judge put mostly on hold last month. Demonstrators attached hundreds of U.S. flags with messages about curbing illegal immigration to the posts. Among those speaking at the rally Sunday was Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, known for his tough enforcement of immigration laws in Arizona's most populous county. [47]

Associated Press Poll: Independent Voters Support for Democrats Dips Sharply; Obamageddon Gaining Speed.
Independents who embraced President Barack Obama's call for change in 2008 are ready for a shift again, and that's problematic news for Liberals. That's way down from the 52 percent of independents who backed Obama over Republican Sen. John McCain two years ago, and the 49% to 41% edge by which they preferred Democratic candidates for the House in that election, according to exit polls of voters.

Other groups that supported Obama but show far less fervor now include young whites, unmarried women, people who live in the West, people earning under $50,000 a year, college graduates and urban whites. The falloff shows that Democrats have work to do with blocs the party hoped an Obama presidency would cement into dependable supporters. There's even erosion among minorities. While 8 in 10 voted for Obama, fewer than two-thirds (6 in 10) want a Democratic Congress, and 1 in 9 don't care which party controls. [48]

New Battle Lines Drawn in Ground Zero Mosque Debate. President Obama's seemingly conflicting responses over the construction of a mosque near Ground Zero draw more criticism to the Obama White House, politicians on both sides of the aisle suggest, as the remark raises the prospect of another sticky election issue burden for Democrat lawmakers in November. University professors pile on against a non-professor's claim to have solved one of the millennium problems. MIT Assistant Professor Scott Aaronson declares, "Vinay Deolalikar still hasn’t retracted his P≠NP claim, but a clear consensus has emerged that the proof, as it stands, is fatally flawed." He absurdly adds, with a cite to Richard Dawkins, "the only miracle in life is that there are no miracles, neither in mathematics nor in anything else." [51]
But the best of the public, aided by the internet, will inevitably solve more problems than liberal colleges will - just as Grigori Perelman solved another millennium problem. The future belongs to the conservative public.

California Court of Appeals Strikes Down Malls' Ban Against Youth Pastor. A three-judge panel of the 3rd District Court of Appeal said Wednesday in a 43-page opinion that the mall owner's rules of conduct "are unconstitutional on their face" under the California Constitution's free speech guarantee. The case arose out of the mall's "citizen's arrest" of a 27-year-old Christian pastor, who had gone to the shopping center to talk to others about his Faith. [54]

Under Intense Fire, Barack Hussein Obama "Clarifies" Support for Ground Zero Mosque. President Obama now seeks to walk his comments back supporting the building of a Muslim mosque near ground zero that have ignited a political firestorm ahead of a difficult election season for Democrats. The American people see what Obama will not acknowledge; New York City will not allow a Christian church to be rebuilt near the site, but bizarrely insists on placing a Mosque where none existed. Barack Hussein Obama Endorses Mosque Project Near Ground Zero Site.

Obama made the comments at a dinner in the White House State Dining Room celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. "President Obama is wrong," said Congressman Peter King, R-N.Y. "It is insensitive and uncaring for the Muslim community to build a mosque in the shadow of ground zero. [64]

The lies and deceit coming from the Obama regime is just too much for some Democrat lawmakers. Secretary Shaun Donovan of HUD talks about an improving real estate market. In a scathing reply, Democrat Representative Dennis Cardoza of California says [Donovan] has a "fundamental disconnect between the reality on the ground and the fairy dust the administration is spreading." Meeting Over New Black Panthers Case Turns Into Scream-Fest. A regularly scheduled "business meeting" of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights today turned into a fiery shout fest -- finger-pointing and all -- over whether the Justice Department was "stonewalling" their investigation into a controversial voting rights case, whether that investigation has been fruitful, and whether the commission can even fulfill its mission anymore. The Department of Homeland Security has a policy to release illegal aliens within the United States. From 2007 to 2009 the government has released 200 fugitives from terror-linked countries. Under Janet Napolitano's authority, this is just routine business as usual. Janice L. Kephart, director of National Security Policy for the Center for Immigration Studies, tells Newsmax that 96 percent of all illegals detained by federal authorities are subsequently released. [67]

Mosque Moves Forward, Yet Christian Church in Limbo. The battle raging over the Ground Zero mosque is bringing new attention to another, less publicized controversy involving a house of worship in Lower Manhattan. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which once sat right across the street from the World Trade Center, was crushed under the weight of the collapse of Tower Two on September 11, 2001. St. Nicholas was the only church to be lost in the attacks, and nine years later, while City of New York officials are busy removing every impediment to the building of the Cordoba mosque two blocks from the site, St. Nicholas’ future remains unclear. St. Nicholas Church’s difficulty in getting approvals to rebuild stands in stark contrast to the treatment that the developers of the proposed Cordoba mosque have received. [71]

Almost all voters — 88 percent — think the country is still in a recession. Less than a third of voters (29%) credit the stimulus package for keeping the country from going into a depression. Nearly two-thirds of voters (63%) believe government has gotten so big it is hurting the future of the country. [89]

U.K. Watch: Britain's advertising watchdog today banned an anti-terrorism commercial that asked people to watch out for suspicious behavior by their neighbors, including keeping curtains closed and paying for things in cash. The Advertising Standards Authority said the radio ad could cause "serious offense" to law-abiding citizens. The ad was part of a campaign for a police anti-terrorist hotline. It described a man who "likes to keep himself to himself," doesn't have a bank card and keeps his curtains closed, before advising that "this may mean nothing, but together it could all add up to you having suspicions." Rough Road Continues for Obama on the Campaign Trail...
The president could be in danger of suffering yet another embarrassing political loss as the candidate he is backing in Colorado's Senate race — Michael Bennet is locked in a tight primary race with another Democrat, who is now leading in the polls, endorsed by....Bill Clinton! Obama's record in helping Democrats get elected isn't exactly sterling -- Democrats lost the gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia despite his help. Plus White House backing was not able to keep Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter in his seat in the Democratic primary race against Rep. Joe Sestak. [116]

Obamacare Considered As Dispassionately As Possible -- If it really will reduce costs, why has Massachusetts’s similar program led to punishing cost increases? According to a Wall Street Journal op-ed piece (The Failure of RomneyCare, March 16, 2010) :

  • "One third of state residents polled by Harvard researchers in a study published in “Health Affairs” in 2008 said that their health costs had gone up as a result of the 2006 reforms. A typical family of four today faces total annual health costs of nearly $13,788, the highest in the country. Per capita spending is 27% higher than the national average." [119]

Democratic Candidates, Under Strategists' Orders, Ignore Their Legislative "Successes". As Democrats fan out across the country to campaign for reelection this month, many are surprisingly quiet about their hard-won accomplishments — the major bills they have passed under President Obama. Liberal Democrat Panic Attack? With the disappointingly soft jobs report for July and a faltering recovery overall, is Team Obama getting ready for some sort of new, liberal-left, Keynesian, big-bang stimulus package? Will it be desperate to "do something"? Already there are rumors of an "August surprise" in which Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac forgive underwater mortgages held by millions of Americans. And with state and local government jobs having fallen 169,000 so far this year, perhaps the Democratic Congress and the White House will seek an even bigger spending plan for teachers and Medicaid workers -- on top of the $26 billion plan that just passed the Senate. Ten members of the Christian medical team — six Americans, two Afghans, one German and a Briton, including three women — were gunned down in a gruesome slaughter that the Taliban said they carried out, alleging the volunteers were spying and trying to convert Muslims to Christianity. The gunmen spared an Afghan driver, who recited verses from the Islamic holy book Koran as he begged for his life. And yet, Obama, Pelosi, and Reid continue on a path that runs polar opposite to the will of the people. The Obama administration told Scottish officials last August that, although it opposed any release of the Lockerbie bomber, it would rather see him released in Scotland than transferred to a Libyan prison, according to a secret memo obtained by The Sunday Times in London. According to The Sunday Times, Scottish officials viewed U.S. resistance to the release as "half-hearted." The publication of the memo's contents comes just days after President Obama, at a press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron, said "all of us ... were surprised, disappointed and angry" by the Scottish government's decision to free Abdel Baset al-Megrahi last year. Massive Leak Provides Unprecedented View of Afghan War. Shocking in scope if not in content, the leak of 91,000 classified U.S. records on the Afghanistan War by the whistle-blower website Wikileaks.org is one of the largest unauthorized disclosures in military history. The documents cover much of what the public already knows about the troubled nine-year conflict: U.S. spec-ops forces have targeted terrorists without trial, Afghans have been killed by accident, and U.S. officials have been infuriated by alleged Pakistani intelligence cooperation with the very insurgent groups bent on killing Americans. What price, treason? [199]
