United States President Donald Trump
Numerous other examples can be given. Please expand, with good sources.

This article discusses the mainstream media and Donald Trump, particularly the former's bias against the latter.

As with other conservatives, and likely more so, the Mainstream Media has waged a war against United States President Donald Trump. This has been to an extent probably not seen before, or at least in recent political history. A comparison of magazine covers between President Trump and Obama illustrate the media's opposition to President Trump.[1]

As evidence of this intense mainstream media opposition to President Trump, a study published close to the 100th-day mark of Trump's presidency found that 89% of media coverage regarding Trump was negative.[2] A similar study conducted by the Harvard Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy released in May 2017 found that 80% of the mainstream media coverage over Trump (including outlets such as Fox News Channel and The Wall Street Journal) was negative.[3] According to the Pew Research Center, in October 2017, the media was three times more negative and eight times less positive toward Trump than it was to Obama, and the media was also significantly more biased against Trump compared to presidents Clinton and Bush II.[4] Additionally, Trump was on track to become the most mocked president on late-night comedy TV in at least 25 years,[5] and the Associated Press found in late 2018 that late-night hosts made more jokes about Trump than any other public figure in history.[6] Earlier, during the presidential campaign, 91% of the media coverage concerning Trump was negative and 96% of campaign contributions from the media went to Clinton.[7] The Media Research Center found that 90% of coverage on President Trump on the evening news of ABC, CBS, and NBC in 2017 was negative and biased against him,[8] and it found in October 2018 that the level was at 92%.[9] The MRC also found in October 2018 that 88% of media coverage of the GOP was negative.[10] It found that media coverage of Trump in 2018 was 90% negative.[11] According to a Pew Research Center poll released in January 2018, the U.S. mainstream media was perceived by Americans as significantly more biased against President Trump than the media in other countries is against their own leaders.[12] A May 2018 poll found that 45% of Americans – a large plurality – believed that the media was too critical of President Trump.[13] Even former president Jimmy Carter, a liberal Democrat, stated that the media was more biased against Trump than any other president he knew about.[14] According to GOP pollster Jim Hobart, the attacks on Trump by the media only increased his popularity with his base.[15]

Many of the media's stories against President Trump used anonymous sources.[16] It was also overly zealous (especially compared to other political figures) in fact-checking President Trump and calling him out for his "lies", despite showing no interest in the many lies Obama told Americans.[17] According to the mainstream media, Donald Trump and his administration have "told many lies" since his inauguration.[18] On January 22, the Mainstream media attacked Trump's counselor Kellyanne Conway’s "alternative facts" statement to do with crowd size during the swearing-in ceremony with White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer earlier on causing a stir, claiming that Trump presided, "the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe."[19] The mainstream media's bias against Trump promoted hatred, bigotry, and even violence against the administration.[20][21] It frequently attacked the president and his supporters.[22]

2016 election and immediate aftermath

Primaries

While mainstream media coverage of Trump was mainly positive at the onset of his presidential campaign, the closer he came to winning the Republican nomination the more negative coverage became.[23]

General election

The mainstream media was extremely biased against and unfair towards Trump throughout the entire 2016 U.S. presidential election.[24][25] One example of this was Trump's claim that many American Muslims celebrated 9/11, which was confirmed by various sources confirming – or in some cases justifying – his claims.[26]

Aftermath

Also, after the 2016 election, several violent and disturbing anti-Trump attacks occurred throughout the nation against Trump supporters or supposed Trump supporters. Despite these attacks, liberals and leftists only focused on alleged "attacks" by Trump supporters against minorities and others (the leftist narrative, although being blatantly false and one-sided, fits their manufactured narrative that Trump supporters are "racist" and "evil" and that leftists are "tolerant" and "forgiving"). It was found that despite the number of real anti-Trump attacks which went largely unreported, several of the "pro-Trump" attacks were found to be hoaxes.[27]

Trump's inauguration crowd size

On January 21, Spicer gave a five-minute statement to the press and discredited claims originating from CNN that claimed photos proved that the audience for Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration was "significantly larger" than Trump's. He stated the news story was an attempt by the anti-Trump media to "minimize enormous support that had gathered on the National Mall."

Alternative Media in turn attacked CNN for their false reporting, producing a video clearly showing the back areas of the mall partially empty in the morning, hours before the main inauguration event started.[28]

The liberal media reporters also conveniently failed to mention the George Soros-sponsored violence by far-Left rioters and vandals (under the ruse of "protesting") that started hours before Trump's inauguration, that resulted in 217 arrests by the evening.[29]

There were also real fears in the anti-Trump reporting in the lead up to the inauguration, that drones might be used to kill Trump and incoming Vice President Mike Pence, killing scores among the crowd in the process.[30]

Illegal voters

President Donald Trump believes that millions of people voted illegally in the US election. He first made the claim in a tweet in late November 2016.

On January 25, Trump tweeted that he will ask for a major investigation into voter fraud: I will be asking for a major investigation into VOTER FRAUD, including those registered to vote in two states, those who are illegal and even, those registered to vote who are dead (and many for a long time). Depending on results, we will strengthen up voting procedures!

According to NPR in 2012, a report by the Pew Center on the States found that more than 1.8 million dead people were registered to vote, and 24 million registrations were either invalid or inaccurate.[31]

A more recent analysis of voting data agrees that Hillary Clinton may have received at least 800,000 votes from illegal aliens.[32] According to Infowars, "it’s worth noting that the 800,000 figure could be a low, conservative estimate."[33]

The liberal cover-up about voter fraud and lies about inaugural crowd size were both repeated during an interview with ABC’s David Muir that aired on January 25.

Firing of U.S. attorneys

When President Trump (and also President George W. Bush) fired federal prosecutors from the Obama Administration, the mainstream media went hysterical, but they had no problem when Presidents Clinton and Obama did the same thing.[34]

Mainstream media's endorsement of anti-Trump vandalism

When reporting of a shameful and criminal act of vandalism some environmentalists committed on one of President Trump's golf courses in March 2017, the leftist Washington Post media called it "a daring act of defiance" before being forced to change its wording.[35]

Lack of reporting on issues

After two immigrant teenagers (at least one was an illegal immigrant) raped another teenager,[36] the mainstream media did very little reporting on the issue, likely because reporting on it would create a more positive view of President Trump's policies.[37][38] On the other hand, the mainstream media spent much time reporting on the fake news story of a rape in the University of Virginia.[39] The White House condemned the crime.[40]

Writing Trump off as a failure at the beginning of his presidency

As in the 2016 presidential election, the mainstream media strongly opposed Trump and wrote him off as a failure early in his presidency, despite his numerous accomplishments by that time.[41] Later on, they continued to attribute President Trump's achievements to Obama.[42]

First 100 days "failure"

Even before President Trump passed the "first 100 days" mark of his presidency, the mainstream media was reporting that he had made no accomplishments, despite much evidence to the contrary.[43][44]

Trump Administration ad

Mainstream media outlets refused to play an ad created by the Trump Administration to promote its achievements during its first 100 days because it called the MSM fake news.[45][46]

Russia

The mainstream media ignored the fact that the Obama Administration took a weak position on Russia while claiming that President Trump's realist foreign policy was somehow weak.[47]

In August 2018, the mainstream media reacted to a tweet President Trump made on a campaign meeting made by his son with a Russian as some sort of groundbreaking revelation that hurt the president, even though he did not reveal anything new, surprising, or contradictory about the meeting.[48][49] On August 21, 2018, the mainstream media described the day as being very bad for the president, because two acquaintances were convicted of crimes, even though none of those convictions had anything to do with Russia.[50]

Russia and Ukraine meetings coverage

On Mary 10, 2017, President Trump met with both the Russian foreign minister and the foreign minister of Ukraine, though not at the same time. However, the MSM only focused on the former and on alleged Russian collusion with the Trump Administration.[51][52]

Trump's first presidential foreign trip

Rather than focusing on President Trump's achievements during his first presidential foreign trip, the mainstream media focused on numerous meaningless non-stories.[53]

Leaks

Despite being vocally anti-Trump, the mainstream media failed to note this when covering an arrested NSA leaker.[54]

Comedic critics

Trump is criticized on a daily basis by late-night television hosts Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah and Seth Meyers. John Oliver and Samantha Bee are also constant critics using weekly shows. Trump is on track to become the most mocked president on late-night comedy TV in at least 25 years.[5] Shows supposed to be late-night comedy shows became very political during Trump's presidency.[55]

Repealing ObamaCare

A study by the Media Research Center in June 2017 showed strong mainstream media coverage against the GOP's and Trump's effort to repeal ObamaCare as opposed to the effort to originally pass it in 2010.[56]

Hypothetical military orders

The media devoted much time reporting a statement made by a military general, who rightly stated, when asked a hypothetical and silly question, that if President Trump ordered a nuclear strike on China, he would follow his orders.[57]

On July 26, 2017, President Trump announced on Twitter that he would reverse an Obama Administration action and ban transgender people from the military.[58] Despite the fact that this was only an announcement, the mainstream media acted as if the announcement was an official order, until the military stated the obvious, that there would be no ban until Trump provides direction to Secretary of Defense James Mattis.[59] President Trump formally signed the transgender ban on August 25, 2017.[60]

Trump vs. MS-13

Despite MS-13 being a very violent and dangerous gang in the U.S. and Central America, the MSM opposed President Trump's efforts to crack down on the gang and mischaracterized his comments, even to the point of sympathizing with the gang.[61]

Charlottesville

In August 2017, after violent and deadly clashes between white supremacists and Antifa activists in Charlottesville, Virginia, President Trump not only strongly criticized the hatred and violence, but, challenging the politically correct attitude of the establishment and the Left, criticized the "many sides" that were responsible for the hatred and violence rather than just the white supremacists.[62] Trump explicitly rejected racism or white supremacism when he urged all Americans to view themselves as Americans first, saying that "above all, we must remember this truth, no matter our color, creed, religion or political party, we are all Americans first."[62] President Trump stood unmoved even after intense media criticism, and in a press conference held a few days later, he again stated that the alt-left was just as responsible for the violence as the alt-right, criticized the media for its one-sidedness and double standards in reporting on the violence, and criticized the Left's opposition to Confederate monuments.[63] As expected, President Trump shocked the mainstream media by his comments,[64] and they distorted his comments to make it seem as if he sympathized with white supremacists.[65][66] At a campaign rally in Arizona on August 22, 2017, President Trump harshly exposed the MSM's liberal bias and deception in their reporting of his public statements after the Charlottesville attacks by actually re-reading his original statements again.[67] (the mainstream media pointed out that he did not include his "many sides" comment[68])

Claims of "racism"

Major "objective" mainstream media publications chose to label President Trump a "racist," even on their front pages.[69]

Coverage of Trump "scandals"

While the media and other liberal organizations made a lot of noise over Trump cabinet officials spending taxpayer money for charter and military flights[70] (enough noise to cause HHS Secretary Tom Price to resign[71]), they had no complaint when Obama Administration officials did the same thing.[72] Despite liberal obsession about Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke's spending on charter flights, Obama Administration Interior Department secretaries spent over 13 times in eight years as Zinke had spent by October 2017.[73] Similarly, while the media emphasized international travel spending by EPA director Scott Pruitt, the Obama Administration's EPA directors spend as must or even more than Pruitt with no media outrage.[74][75][76] At the same time, they showed shock and outrage at his corruption while ignoring Hillary Clinton's clear corruption.[77]

While the mainstream media highly emphasized and showed strong outrage against the 2016 Trump campaign's data mining on Facebook, Obama's 2012 campaign did the same thing, something the media responded with either silence or praise.[78]

Immigration statements out of context

Despite clearly calling only MS-13 members "animals" in May 2018, the media knowingly[79] took his comments out of context to claim that he used the term for all illegals.[80]

Other examples of bias on immigration

The mainstream media exhibited blatant and even embarrassing bias against the Trump Administration,[81] and it fabricated a "border crisis" in May and June 2018 in order to hurt President Trump, among other reasons.[82] According to the Media Research Center in July 2018, 92% of mainstream media coverage of President Trump's immigration policies were negative, and it gave migrants and illegals 120 time more airtime than victims of illegal migrant crime.[83][84] In May 2018, left-wing activists and some members of the mainstream media, such as New York Times Magazine editor-in-chief Jake Silverstein and NPR, shared pictures of detained illegal immigrant children sleeping in cages and blamed the Trump Administration for it despite those pictures having been taken during the Obama Administration.[85] An Associated Press report discussing alleged abuse at an illegal immigrant detention center left out the fact that Obama was president when the abuse happened.[86] Other media sources have published fake news about President Trump's immigration policies[87] and alleged "heartbreaking stories" that were made up or misleading.[88] The Time Magazine issued one of its magazines about the illegal immigration family separation policy, but the child on the magazine's front page had never been separated from her parents.[89] The media also had no problem when the Obama Administration executed the same policies that they became hysterical about when the Trump Administration did them.[90] They ignored the fact that family separation for illegals had been occurring even before 2001.[91]

In June 2018, a CNN "reporter" went on a political and moralistic rant during a White House press briefing over certain Trump Administration actions on illegal immigration (despite being a reporter), and he refused to apologize afterward.[92] During the same press conference, a reporter played a recording of illegal minors crying, apparently trying to make a statement on the policy.[93] Also in June 2018, the Associated Press falsely labeled chain-link partitions where illegals are temporarily held as "cages."[94]

In addition to its extreme bias when covering the Trump Administration's zero tolerance illegal immigration policy, the mainstream media misrepresented the facts over the policy and mislead its viewers.[95] Although the media pressured President Trump to end the policy of separating illegal alien parents from their children, when Trump actually did this, they sided with Democrats by going further and demanding open borders policies and the abolition of ICE.[96]

The mainstream media also published some articles defending MS-13.[97]

"Anti-First Amendment" fake news

While the mainstream media frequently implied or explicitly claimed that the Trump Administration was a danger to First Amendment right, they forgot that many previous presidents, including Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama, had even worse records on free press rights.[98]

Trump and violence

The mainstream media tried to blame President Trump for acts of violence that in reality had nothing to do with him. For example, after a shooting in Maryland, a Reuters editor blamed the president for the attack,[99] and a Massachusetts newspaper reporter resigned after falsely claiming that the shooter wore a MAGA hat.[100][101]

Security clearances

The media acted hysterically when President Trump removed John Brennan's security clearance despite the latter being a political hack, but in 2013, it had no problem when Obama removed the security clearances of many more former intelligence officials.[102]

Visiting overseas U.S. troops

The media reported that President Trump never visited U.S. troops stationed overseas during the Christmas Season before the Christmas Season even ended.[103][104][105] After President Trump did visit U.S. troops, the Left and media continued attacking him.[106][107][108][109]

President Trump's response

On February 17, 2017, Trump tweeted: "The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!"[110]

On February 24, 2017, President Trump excluded several liberal media organizations from attending a press briefing.[111][112]

In January 2018, President Trump released his "2017 Fake News Awards", which he awarded to mainstream media outlets for false stories related to himself.[113] There were eleven winners, with The New York Times in first place and with CNN in the list four times.[113]

Donald Trump's association with conservative media

Rather than associate with the leftist mainstream media, Trump has associated himself with the conservative media, particularly Fox News.[114] In April 2017, President Trump hosted a media briefing exclusively for conservative media outlets.[115]
