Maryland won its independence from Great Britain in the American War for Independence in 1783.

Politics

The current governor of Maryland is Martin O'Malley(D) (2007- ). The capital of Maryland is Annapolis, located in Anne Arundel County. It is sub-dvided into 24 counties.[2]
