Mathematical notation is the way mathematicians use symbols, terminology and syntax to formulate ideas in a formal, mathematical way. The notation lets mathematicians understand the concepts clearly, but it may seem like a foreign language to laypeople. Acknowledging this difficulty, mathematicians call the most basic notation a first-order language.
