Michael Shumway "Mike" Lee (born June 4, 1971) is mostly a constitutional conservative, a constitutional lawyer, a paleolibertarian, and is the senior Republican United States Senator from Utah, having won the 2010 election, having been backed by the Tea Party Movement and the Senate Conservatives Fund. He scored a primary victory against incumbent Republican Bob Bennett. He promised to reduce the cost, size and scope of the federal government. His father was an Assistant U.S. Attorney General under President Ford and U.S. Attorney General under Ronald Reagan. Lee's legal career includes a one-year clerkship with Justice Samuel Alito at the U.S. Supreme Court. He and his wife Sharon have three children and live in Alpine, Utah.
Once a frontrunner to be nominated by a Republican president to the U.S. Supreme Court, Senator Lee hurt his chances by speaking out against candidate Donald Trump in October 2016. Trump then won the presidential election to the surprise of Utah Republican insiders, and passed over Mike Lee three times in filling vacancies.
