It achieved some strength in certain constituency Labour Parties in the 1970s and early '80s, deselecting right-wing and centrist Labour MPs and parliamentary candidates and replacing them with more ideologically acceptable candidates, and it was also able to gain control of Liverpool City Council in the early 1980s.
