Min Aung Hlaing (born 3 July 1956) is a Burmese General and Leader of Myanmar since the 2021 Coup. Soon after he took power, Joe Biden reimposed sanctions on Myanmar.[1] In spite of some autocratic tendencies, General Hlaing cracked down on the George Soros Open Society Foundations in the country.[2]. The US House passed a resolution condemning the coup in Myanmar, which was opposed by 14 republicans including : Andy Biggs, Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, and Mary Miller.
The coup
Hlaing was meant to retire in 2021 due to Myanmar's retirement age of 65, he is currently 64, however due to him now becoming president, it is unknown whether he will be forced into retirement.
Dissolution of the NLD
Hlaing dissolved the NLD party, led by Aung San Suu Kyi on May 21, 2021 after he claimed the party practiced Election Fraud.
