Monocracy is a government run by a single person.
This can be contrasted with:
- aristocracy, which is government by a privileged class
- democracy, which is government by the people
- gerontocracy, which is government by a group of elders
- ochlocracy, which is government by a mob
- theocracy, which is government by a claim of divine authority
