The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) is an organization that was founded in 1909 to work for the rights and advancement of African Americans (then called "Colored"). The NAACP is the largest organization of its kind with 400,000 members. Through its history, the organization saw a number of changes occur for the group it represented, from the removal of Jim Crow laws, to the end of segregation, and to the implementation of affirmative action.
Today the NAACP has become a highly political entity, strongly bending the laws of acceptability for a non-profit organization, and in some cases flaunting them. Due to this politicization, President George W. Bush skipped meeting with the NAACP for a number of years instead favoring other organizations that represent the African American community, but are less politicized.
