Nicholas of Lyra (1270–1349) was a Franciscan and a Biblical exegete, by some scholars regarded as the greatest of the fourteenth century and in the West since Jerome. He demonstrated an extensive knowledge of Hebrew and became thoroughly acquainted with the Jewish teaching in Talmud. His magnum opus was the Literal postill on the whole Bible.[1]
