A notochord is a rod of tough, flexible material that runs the length of a creature's body, providing the majority of its support.[1] Presence of a notochord at some point in development is one of the primary attributes of the phylum chordata.

Notochord also refers to the creatures that exhibit them as adult animals, notably, the sharks and rays.
