The Novorossiya (New Russia) is a vast historical and cultural region in the Northern Black Sea region, which was annexed to the Russian Empire as a result of the Russo — Turkish wars in the second half of the 18th century. The region turned from an undeveloped steppe with rare nomads into a powerful industrial area, which became the backbone of the economy of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union.
