Omar al-Bashir
Omar al-Bashir (born 1944) is the current President of Sudan. He came to power in an Islamist-backed coup in 1989.
Omar al-Bashir is criticized by various governments and by organizations such as Amnesty International, for not acting on various crises, most notably the Darfur conflict, in which Arab Muslim militias known collectively as the Janjaweed have massacred, raped, and displaced 2.5 million non-Arab Muslim villagers.
On June 14, 2008, the International Criminal Court's top prosecutor charged Al-Bashir with masterminding a campaign of genocide, and asked the court for an arrest warrant for the leader. The International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague issued a warrant for his arrest on accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
