In Greek mythology, Pandora was a woman entrusted by the gods with a box, and told never to open it. However, due to what the story calls feminine curiosity, she did open the box, and resultantly let loose from it all the misfortunes that befall men (such as greed and death). Pandora closed the box, trapping the sprite of hope inside, but when it begged to be released, she opened the box again, allowing hope to enter the world.[1]

Pandora is also the name of the fictional setting for the movie Avatar.
