The Panic of 1873 was a major nationwide economic depression that (temporarily) ruined the railroad industry and halted expansion, during the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant.

For the first time workers engaged in large-scale violent strikes that soured the atmosphere, such as the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 in Martinsburg, West Virginia.[1]
