Paramilitary

A paramilitary is an organisation which is similar in structure to a national military, but is not part of the armed forces of any nation. Often, paramilitary groups are engaged in combat with either a nation's officially recognised armed forces, or with other paramilitary organisations. Examples of paramilitaries include the Ulster Volunteer Force in Northern Ireland and the communist Red Brigades in Italy.
