A Parent is a person who is responsible for the upbringing and rearing of a child. Parents traditionally come in pairs--a man and a woman--but it is not uncommon to find single-parent families due to divorce, death, or other circumstances. A parent generally has had a direct role in the biological creation of the child; however, in the case of adoption there usually is no biological relationship. Parents who raise an adopted child are known as adoptive or foster parents, except in the case of close relatives who may be referred to as "a grandmother/father who raised me like a mother/father" (to give an example).
