A passerine (Latin: passer "sparrow") is a bird of the order Passeriformes, sometimes known as "perching birds" or "songbirds". More than half of all species of bird are passerines. More than half of all bird species are passerines: with approximately 5,400 species, it is twice as diverse as the largest of the mammal orders, Rodentia.
