Persepolis (Old Persian تخت جمشید, 'Takht-e Jamshid') was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire. Archaeological and written evidence suggests that Persepolis was founded around 518 BC by Darius I. Alexander the Great sacked Persepolis in 333 BC in delayed retribution for the sacking of Athens by the Persians in 480 B.C.
