Philippe de Vitry was a French composer of the 14th century, noted for having developed the ars nova, which blended secular music with sacred, and utilised advances in musical notation to specify a greater independence between polyphonic parts.
His treatise of 1322, The Ars Nova gave its name to the new movement, though it is now lost. Relatively little of his output has survived - just some of his motets and none of his chansons.
