IMDb profile
Popeye the Sailor (also known as Popeye the Sailor with Betty Boop) is a Popeye the Sailor theatrical animated short produced by Fleischer Studios and released on July 14, 1933.

Plot

Trivia

  • The opening portion of this short, which shows Popeye singing his theme song "I'm Popeye the Sailor Man" in full, was later incorporated into the 1934 singalong short Let's Sing with Popeye, which often preceded Saturday afternoon children's matinee movies during the 1930s.
  • This short has been edited for TV airings in recent years to remove a racially offensive black stereotype (in the form of an "African dodger" carnival game).

Production notes

  • Although officially released as a cartoon in the Betty Boop theatrical series, this cartoon was the first of what would become a spinoff series featuring Popeye, which lasted from 1933 to 1957 and became the most popular theatrical animated series ever made by Fleischer Studios/Famous Studios/Paramount Cartoon Studios.
