Prophecy

See also Bible prophecy.

Prophecy (noun—prof’-eh-see) is the phenomenon of utterance or revelation attributed to a divine or supernatural source. To prophesy (verb—prof’-eh-sigh) is the act of revealing divine guidance or future events, not because of chance or reasonable inference, but as a consequence of having received a gift from God.

The Bible records the acts of a number of different prophets, and prophecy is described as a gift of the Holy Spirit. False prophets have been stoned for deceiving in the name of God.

See Revelation, Book of (historical exegesis).
