Quantum electrodynamics is a modernized theory of electrodynamics that takes into account the principles of quantum mechanics and special relativity. Whereas classical electrodynamics is described in terms of fields and forces — the electric field and the Coulomb force, specifically — quantum electrodynamics describes all interactions between electrically charged objects in terms of exchanges of photons.
