Ramses II was a very long-lived pharaoh of the Egyptian kingdom being on the thrown from 1290 to 1224 B.C. He was the son of Seti I. He reached an accommodation with the Hittites of Anatolia after a standoff in the Battle of Kadesh in Syria. He built on a grand scale throughout Egypt, and was fully deified in his own lifetime. Modern examination of his body shows that he must have suffered greatly in old age due to a number of ailments.
