Raul Castro (born 3 June 1931) is the younger brother of Fidel Castro, and succeeded his brother as President of Cuba in 2008, having acted as de facto president since 2006. He was not elected to this position. He had previously been head of the Cuban armed forces. Castro was an atheist Marxist-Leninist dictator. On April 19, 2018, Castro was succeeded by Miguel Díaz-Canel as president.[1]
People still faced serious persecution under Castro's regime if they criticized the deceased Fidel Castro, as in the example of a Christian leader who was arrested in March 2017 and sentenced to three years in prison, a few months after his young children were arrested.[2]
