Raymond Gibbs, known as Ray Gibbs (born c. 1943),[1] is a gospel singer from Pensacola, Florida, who from 1970 to 1981 was a soloist with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
A native of Tucson, Arizona, Gibbs was reared in San Diego, California, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Voice Performance and Conducting at San Diego State University. He then obtained a Masters of Music degree in Opera Theater at the Manhattan School of Music. He has sung leading roles with many opera companies in Europe and North America. He has served on the faculties of the University of Memphis, formerly Memphis State University, and Pensacola Christian College.[2]
Gibbs on his website calls himself a "teacher who is dedicated to his students and who will give all he has to making sure that each of his students reach their fullest potential. ... Students and teachers must understand each other and each other’s goals. I believe that classical training is the best and most healthy way to sing and that is the only style of teaching that I offer in my studio."[3]
Gibbs' wife, the former Ann Marie Perkins (born c. 1950), a native of Georgia, is a graduate of Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, with a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance and a Master of Music in Voice Performance from the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. Mrs. Gibbs has sung with opera companies in Santa Fe, New Mexico; Baltimore, Maryland, and Houston, Texas. Gibbs left the Metropolitan Opera upon his conversion to faith in Jesus Christ. He and Ann formed a traveling music ministry and have sung in churches all over the United States and in some foreign countries. Once retired from college teaching, the two resumed their traveling ministry.[2] A daughter, Christina Gibbs, joins her parents on tour on occasion.
