Realists were Scholasticists who preferred the works of Plato and his belief that universals existed in their own right. This view was at odds with Nominalism. Conceptualism designates several metaphysical doctrines proposing a compromise between realism and nominalism which regard universals as concepts. See Objectivism. Compare Idea and Idealism.
