Recitative

In operas and oratorios, a recitative is a vocal passage in free rhythm, accompanied most often by continuo comprised of harpsichord or organ, and often with cello. Usually recitatives contain great amounts of text sung quickly, and at their end establish the key of the more melodic aria, which comes immediately after it.
