A rectangle is a polygon of four sides where every angle is a right angle (90°).[1]

As a result of this definition:

  • Each pair of opposite sides is of equal length.
  • Opposite sides are parallel
  • Diagonals are equal
  • Adjacent sides are perpendicular
  • Area = product of any two adjacent sides

Please note that the adjacent sides may or may not be of equal length. The special case where all four sides of a rectangle are equal is called a square, which is also a rhombus and a kite.

Notes

  1. There are many definitions of rectangle, but it seems sensible to use one which is based on angle properties rather than length or parallelism properties. Definition adapted from http://www.mathsisfun.com/definitions/rectangle.html
