Barack Hussein Obama's religious beliefs are currently the subject of intense speculation. It is believed that he is either a Muslim, an Atheist or a Christian. There is a significant body of evidence that supports he has a faith in each.

Obama and Atheism

  • When he initially took the oath of office on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, Obama misspoke (possibly due to Chief Justice Roberts not being prepared) and out of an "abundance of caution" the oath was retaken the next day. CNN.com noted, "Though a Bible was used in Tuesday's oath, one was not used for Wednesday's." [1]
  • Since assuming office Obama has not attended a single church function. [2]

Obama and Islam

Obama and Christianity

Barak Obama and his wife (who was raised a Baptist) were members of the Trinity United Church of Christ[3] in Chicago, led by Pastor Jeremiah Wright, for twenty years. The church embraces black liberation theology and its emphasis on empowering oppressed groups against establishment forces.[4] This denomination was the first in America to ordain gays, women and blacks as ministers.[Citation Needed] According to his sister, Obama was baptized at this church in 1988, when he was in his late 20's.[5] Obama describes his conversion in his book, The Audacity of Hope, the title of which is taken from one of Pastor Wright's sermons.

In April 2008, Obama disavowed Pastor Wright's views. In May 2008, Obama left his church after twenty years of membership. His response blamed the media , stating “It's not fair to the other members of the church who seek to worship in peace, so our faith remains strong and I suspect we will find another church home for our family."[6]. He also called Wright's rhetoric "a bunch of rants that aren't grounded in the truth."[7][8]
