Michelangelo, The Pieta.

Renaissance is a French word for "rebirth". Merriam-Webster [1] describes the Renaissance as "the transitional movement in Europe between medieval and modern times beginning in the fourteenth century in Italy, lasting into the seventeenth century," which included "a flowering of the arts and literature" and "the beginnings of modern science".

For a more detailed description, see The Renaissance.
