Richard M. Johnson was Vice President of the United States from 1837 to 1841 under Martin Van Buren. In 1806, he represented Kentucky in the House, but left to fight in the War of 1812. He claimed to have killed the Indian chief Tecumseh at the Battle of Thames in 1813. This caused the slogan "Rumphsey Dumpsey, Colonal Johnson killed Tecumseh." He returned to the House of Representatives and later on to the Senate. He was the first of the three Vice Presidents named Johnson (the other two are Andrew Johnson, and Lyndon B. Johnson.) [1]
