Robert II (1371-1390), also known as Robert the Steward, was the first Stewart king of Scotland. Born in 1316, he was the son of Walter Stewart and of Marjory, the only daughter of Robert the Bruce. He succeeded his uncle, David II, in 1371; previously, during David's long imprisonment by the English, he had twice served as regent. Robert married twice, and had children in both marriages. This led to problems further down the Stewart line.
Robert II spent the first 18 years (1371 - 1389) of his reign as a prisoner in England. He made little or no changes to Scottish politics or law, and he died peacefully in 1390.
He was succeeded by his son, Robert III.
