Roger Brooke Taney was the Fifth Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court (1836-1864) succeeding the Honorable John Marshall and preceding the Honorable Salmon P. Chase. He was nominated for the Supreme Court by then president Andrew Jackson. He is most famous for the decision he wrote in Dred Scott v. Sanford, which rendered multiple slavery compromises void. Prior to being elevated to the Court, he was the 12th Secretary of the Treasury and 12th Attorney General.
