Rufus King (1755-1827) was a delegate from Massachusetts to the Constitutional Convention and, at age 32, one of the youngest to sign the U.S. Constitution there.
During the Revolutionary War, King had served as an aide to General Sullivan. Later he was the U.S. Minister to England, and he also served in Congress as a Senator from New York.
In Congress when Missouri petitioned for statehood, King declared:[1]
- I hold that all laws or compacts imposing any such condition as slavery upon any human being are absolutely void because they are contrary to the law of nature, which is the law of God.
