Chapter 1

Verse King James Version Proposed Conservative Translation Analysis
1 Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons. In the days when politicians ruled there was a famine in the land. A man from Bethlehemjudah went on a trip to the country of Moab with his wife and two sons. Politicians causing famine - Biblical support for the idea of small government.
2 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there. This man's name was Elimelech, his wife was named Naomi and his sons where called Mahlon and Chilion. They where Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. They entered they continued travelling in the country of Moab.
3 And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons. There Elimelch died, he was survived by his wife Naomi and their two sons.
4 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years. And there they married women of Moab: One was named Orpah, the other was Ruth: They lived there for approximately ten years.
5 And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband. And both Mahlon and Chilion died; and the woman was left out of her two sons and husband.
6 Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread. She then departed with her daughters in law, so that she may leave the country of Moab. She had heard that LORD had been visiting people and giving them bread in the country of Moab.
7 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah. She and her two daughters in law then left the country they where in and went back to the land of Judah.
8 And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. Naomi said to here daughters in laws; Go and return to your mum's house. The LORD will kindly deal with you as you have dealt with the dead and me.
9 The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept. The LORD shall grant you and you may find rest in you house. She then kissed them as they cried.
10 And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people. And they told her, for with you we will return to your people.
11 And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? And Naomi said, return, my daughters: why will you go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb to be your husbands?
12 Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons; Return, my daughters, because I am too old to get a husband. If I will say, I have hope, if I will have a husband tonight and will give birth to children,
13 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me. Would you wait until they are grown? Will you not give yourself to a man? No, my daughters, because it is tougher for me than you, because the hand of the LORD went out against me.
14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her. And they changed their voice, and cried some more: and Orpah gave a kiss to her mother in law, and Ruth stuck to her.
15 And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law. And she said, here comes your sister in law back to her people, and to her gods: go back after your sister in law.
16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: And Ruth said, don't tell me to leave you or to return and to not follow you, because wherever you will go I will go, and when you will sleep I will sleep: your people are my people and your God is my God:
17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me. Where you will die I will die, and will be buried there: this is what the LORD will do to me, and will make it so that death will separate between you and me.
18 When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her. And she that she was trying to go with her, and she stopped talking to her.
19 So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi? And they both went until they reached Bethlehem. And when they came to Bethlehem, all the the city was excited by them, and they said, is this Naomi?
20 And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. And she told them, don't call me Naomi, call me Mara, because the Almighty has been bitter to me.
21 I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me? I went out full, and the LORD returned me empty: why should you call me Naomi when the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has done bad to me?
22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest. And Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, who returned from the land of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of the Barley Harvest.

Chapter 2

Verse King James Version Proposed Conservative Translation Analysis
1 And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband's, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz. And Noami had a kinsman of her husband, a very wealthy man, from the family of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz.
2 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter. And Ruth the Moabite told Naomi, I will go to the field and pick up grain after the one that in his eyes I will be found likeable. And she told her, go, my daughter.
3 And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech. And she went and came, and picked grain in the field after the reapers: and she came to a part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was from the family of Elimelech.
4 And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD bless thee. And then Boaz came from Bethlehem, and told the reapers, the LORD is with you, and they told him, the LORD will bless you.
5 Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose damsel is this? And Boaz said to his boy, who was in charge of the reapers, to whom does this teenager belongs to?
6 And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab: And the boy who was in charge of the reapers said, She is a Moabite teenager that came with Naomi from the land of Moab:
7 And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house. And she said, let me pick grains and gather after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came and stand from the morning until now, she has been staying the house for a shot time.
8 Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens: Then Boaz told Ruth, haven't you heard my girl? Don't go to pick grains in another field, and don't go from here, but stick around with my girls.
9 Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn. Your eyes on the field will do the reaping, and go after them: Did I not tell the boys not to touch you? And you will be thirsty, go to the tools, and drink what the boys have drawn.
10 Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger? And she fell on her face and bowed down, and told him, Why did you find me likeable, that you would like to know me, considering that I'm a foreigner?
11 And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore. And Boaz told her, I have been told of all that you have done to your mother in law since the death of your husband: and now you left your mother and father and your homeland and you went to a people you did not know before.
12 The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust. The LORD will pay you for your work, and a full wage will be give to you from the LORD God of Israel, that you have come to be under his wings.
13 Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens. And she said, Let me be likeable in your eyes, my LORD; because you have comforted me and spoken to the heart of your servant, even though I am not like your other servants.
14 And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come thou hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her parched corn, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left. And during mealtime Boaz told her, come forth and eat the bread, and dip you morsel in the vinegar. And she set next to the reapers: and he gave her parched corn, and she ate and was full and then left.
15 And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not: And she rose to pick grain; Boaz commanded his boys, saying, let her pick grains even in the sheaves, and don't approach her:
16 And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not. And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, so that she will pick them, and don't criticize her.
17 So she gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that she had gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley. So she picked grain in the field until the evening, and beat out what she had picked: and it was about an ephah of barley.
18 And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed. And she carried it and came to the city: and her mother in law saw what she had picked: she gave to her what she saved after she was full.
19 And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, and said, The man's name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz. And her mother in law told her, where did you picked grains today? And where did you work? He who looked at you should be blessed. And she told her mother in law what she did with him, and said, The man with whom I worked today is called Boaz.
20 And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen. And Naomi told her daughter in law, Blessed he is to the LORD, who has not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi told her, The man is a relative of ours, one of our extended family.
21 And Ruth the Moabitess said, He said unto me also, Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest. And Ruth the Moabite said, He also told me, you will stick to my boys until they will finish all of my harvest.
22 And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any other field. And Naomi told Ruth her daughter in law, It will be good, my daughter, that you will go with his girls, that they will not hurt you in the other field.
23 So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law. So she stuck to the girls of Boaz to pick to pick grains until the end of the barley harvest and the wheat harvest; and she lived with her mother in law.

Chapter 3

Verse King James Version Proposed Conservative Translation Analysis
1 Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee? And Naomi her mother in law told her, My daughter, should I not ask that you will have rest, so it will be good for you?
2 And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor. And now is not Boaz from out extended family, with whose girls you you have been? Look, he is planting barley in the night in the threshingfloor.
3 Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking. So wash and anoint yourself, and put a dress on you, and get down to the floor: but don't show yourself to the man, until he finished eating and drinking.
4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do. When he lies down, you will notice the place where he will lie, uncover his feet and lay yourself down; and he will tell you what you shall do.
5 And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do. And she told her, All that you say to me I will do.
6 And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law bade her. And she went down to the floor, and acted according to what her mother in law told her.
7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down. And when Boaz ate and drank, and his heart was jolly, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid down.
8 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet. And so at midnight, the man was afraid and turned himself: and there it was, a woman lying by his feet.
9 And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman. And he said, Who are you? And she answered, I am Ruth your your maid, you spread your wing over your maid; because you are a near kinsman.
10 And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich. And he said, Blessed you are for the LORD, my daughter: you first act of charity was greater than your last, for you didn't go to young men, poor or rich.
11 And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman. And now, my daughter, don't fear; I will do to you everything you request: for all of my people know you are a virtuous woman.
12 And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I. And now it is true that I am your near relative: but there is a relative closer than me.
13 Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning. Sleep tonight, and in it the morning, if he will perform the role of a relative to you then well; let him do the role of a relative: but if he will not do the role of a relative to you, then I will do the role of a relative to you, as the LORD lives: sleep until the morning.
14 And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor. And say lat next to his feet until the morning, and she rose before one could know the other. And he, It should be known that a woman came to the floor.
15 Also he said, Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city. And he said, Bring the towel that is on you, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and put it on her: and she went to the city.
16 And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her. And she come to her mother in law, who said, Who are you, my daughter? And she told her all about what the man had done to her.
17 And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law. And she said, He gave me these six measures of barley; because he told me, Don't go with nothing to your mother in law.
18 Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day. And she said, Sit my daughter, until you will know how things will turn out: because the man will not rest until he will finish the thing today.

Chapter 4

Verse King James Version Proposed Conservative Translation Analysis
1 Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down. And Boaz went to the gate, and sat there: and then the relative that Boaz spoke about came by; he told him, Turn aside and sit here. And he turned aside and sat.
2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down. And he took ten men from the elders of the city, and said, Sit here. And they sat.
3 And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's: And he told the relative, Naomi, who came back from the land of Moab, sold the portion of land which belonged to our brother Elimelech:
4 And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it. And I decided to advertise you, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders from my people. If you are going to redeem it then redeem it. If not you will not redeem it, then tell so that I will know: that is because there is no one that I know of to redeem it except you; and I am after you. And he said, I will redeem it.
5 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance. And Boaz said, When you will buy the field from Naomi, you must buy it also from Ruth the Moabite, the wife of the deceased, to raise up the name of the deceased upon his territory.
6 And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it. And the relative said, I cannot redeem it for myself, because it will corrupt my own territory: You will redeem it instead of me, because I cannot redeem it.
7 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel. Now this was the manner in previous times in Israel concerning redemption and concerning change. For to confirm all things; a man took off his shoe and gave it to his neighbour, and this was a testimony in Israel.
8 Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe. Therefore the brother said to Boaz, buy it for them. So he took off his shoe.
9 And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi. And Boaz told the elders and all the other people, "You are witnesses this day, I have purchased all that was Elimelech's, Chilion's and Mahlon's from the hand of Noami.
10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day. And also I have bought as a wife Ruth the Moabite, Wife of Mahlon, to raise the name of the dead on his territory, so the name of the dead will not be cut from his brothers, and from the gate of his place: you have witnessed it today.
11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem: And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD will give the woman who comes to your house like Rachel and Leah, the two of which build the house of Israel: and did good in Ephratah, and were famous in Bethlehem:
12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman. And let your house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bore for Judah, from the seed which the LORD will give you of this teenager.
13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son.
14 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
15 And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.
17 And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
18 Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron,
19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,
20 And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,
21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,
22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
