SLM Corporation, better known by its nickname, Sallie Mae, is a publicly-traded United States corporation whose operations consist of originating, servicing and collecting on student loans and savings plans. Managing more than $188 billion in debt for more than 10 million borrowers, it provides federally guaranteed student loans originated under the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP).

Sallie Mae is the United State’s leading provider of saving, planning and paying for education programs. Since its founding more than 35 years ago, the company has invested in more than 31 million people to help them realize their goal of higher education. The company provides federal and private student loans for undergraduate and graduate students and their parents. In addition, Sallie Mae offers comprehensive information and resources to assist students, parents, and guidance professionals with the financial aid process. The company also helps families save for college through 529 college savings plans and through its Upromise savings program. Sallie Mae manages $188 billion in education loans and serves 10 million student and parent customers. Through its Upromise affiliates, the company also manages more than $19 billion in 529 college-savings plans, and is a major, private source of college funding contributions in America, with 11 million members and more than $500 million in member rewards.

Sallie Mae is listed on the Fortune 500 list and is one of the Top Innovators in IT according to InformationWeek. The company also has been recognized as one of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens according to Business Ethics magazine and one of the top 30 companies for executive women by the National Association of Female Executives.[1]
