Senator Saxby Chambliss, born November 10, 1943 (age 80), was a senator from the state of Georgia. A Republican, he had been in the Senate since 2002, when he defeated Democrat Max Cleland to gain the seat in a controversial race, after which Chambliss was accused of painting his veteran opponent as unpatriotic. His colleague was Johnny Isakson, a fellow Republican, and a former colleague when both were in the House of Representatives, as well.
Chambliss was successful in holding off his liberal and democratic Jim Martin, keeping the filibuster in the balance. Saxby Chambliss said that he is pro-life and does not support homosexual marriage, but supports tax increases, even though earlier in his career he received a reward from Grover Norquist for taking the opposite position.
