Skowhegan is a town in the state of Maine located along the Kennebec River banks. It has a population of around 8,500 residents, and annual events in there include the state fair as well as the Kneading Conference and Artisan Bread Fair, considered a newer tradition.
Significant political figures from Skowhegan include Clyde H. Smith, who was at one point the sheriff of the town and later was elected to the United States House of Representatives. Upon his death in office, his widow Margaret Chase Smith, also a resident, also succeeded him and would be elected to the Senate in her own right.
