A Smear Campaign is a publicity campaign aimed at defaming one's opponent or rival in an election as much as possible, rather than promoting one's own virtue. Popular with any product or proponent who knows their own merit is nonexistent.
Smear campaigns may also be conducted by the media, exaggerating or completely fabricating malicious hearsay in order to plant the seeds of doubt in voters' minds.
