Sociopathy is "a person with a psychopathic personality whose behavior is antisocial, often criminal, and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience."

It is a mental disorder that is synonymous with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) in which the person with the disorder exhibits an unusually lethargic way of demonstrating empathy. In other words, empathy is severely lacking.

Like many psychological disorders, the exact mechanism and etiology of this disorder is still unknown.

Many with the diagnosis are believed to lack a conscience, which is pivotal to a healthy psyche. Psychological treatment is therefore important for successful integration into society.
